Terri Gay Hinson, 67, was unexpectedly called home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 4, 2025.
Terri was born on October 8, 1957 to the late William Lloyd Gay, Jr. and Bobbie Watson Gay in Fort Gaines, Georgia, and grew up on her family’s farm in Sumter County. She graduated from Southland Academy in 1975, then earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Georgia Southwestern University in 1978, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She later obtained both her Master’s and Specialist degrees in Education.
On June 24, 1978, she married the love of her life, Bill Hinson, and together they made their home in Albany, GA. Terri dedicated over 38 years instilling the love of learning in countless children as an elementary school teacher. She served with the Lee County Board of Education for 46 years, retiring in 2024, and remained an active member of the Retired Teachers’ Association.
Terri was a longtime member of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, GA and most recently attended Central Baptist Church in Americus after moving back to the family farm in 2023.
Terri is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Bill Hinson; her daughter, LauraLee Barnes (Jeff) and grandchildren, Brayden (11), Ella (8), and Brooks (5); her son, Wesley Hinson (Abby), and her grandson Westin (2); her brother, Alton Gay (Pam); her mother-in-law, Betty Hinson; her brother-in-law, Mark Hinson; as well as several beloved nieces and nephews.
Terri’s loves were Jesus and her family. Her favorite role in life was “Honey” to her 4 grandchildren, who were her self-proclaimed happy place. She had a servant’s heart, and faithfully served the Lord and others with her strength, patience, and kindness. Terri was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone, anytime, anywhere— no questions asked. Terri gave so much of herself to everyone around her, and in return, she was deeply loved by all who knew her. Whether you knew her as “Honey,” teacher, friend, or family, you felt her warmth and carried it with you.
