Reginald Lynwood Comer

March 15, 1943 — December 16, 2025

Reginald Lynwood Comer, 82, of Americus, Georgia, passed away on December 16, 2025. Born on March 15, 1943, in Lawrenceville, Georgia, to James Madison Lynwood Comer and LaVerne Mackin Comer, Reggie lived a life devoted to education, family, faith, and friendship.

A beloved educator, Reggie served as Assistant Professor Emeritus of French at Georgia Southwestern State University, where he enriched the lives of students for three decades from 1970 to 2000. He began his tenure in October 1970 as an instructor of French and became known not only for his mastery of languages—French, Spanish, and German—but also for his passion for sharing French culture through study abroad programs. He delighted in leading groups of GSW students to experience France firsthand. His dedication to teaching brought him back to the classroom in 2011, when he returned to GSW as a part-time instructor. He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education from the University of Georgia.

Reggie was an active member of First Methodist Church of Americus, where he joyfully sang in the choir and he also enjoyed many years of the driving groups on the church bus on field trips and adventures. True to his nature, he never met a stranger and welcomed everyone with warmth and kindness.

He was a devoted husband of 56 years to the love of his life, Mary Dial Comer. A proud and loving father to his son Clay Comer (Leigh Anne) of Columbus, Georgia, and his daughter Carin Comer-Villeneuve (Pete) of Lakeville, Massachusetts. His greatest joy was being “Granddad” to Gabriel Villeneuve, Ariel Villeneuve, Luke Villeneuve, and Savannah Comer. He is also survived by his brother Bruce Comer (Susan) of Griffin, Georgia; nephews David Comer (Mary) and Stephen Comer (Natalie); and many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was also deeply devoted to his beloved dog, Charlotte Grace.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 28, 2025, at First Methodist Church of Americus with Rev. Daryl Brown officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., with the service following in the sanctuary at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be private for the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Methodist Church Music Fund.
