Lehmon Eugene "Gene" Dunmon passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2026 at Perfect Care.

Funeral services are planned for 2:00 PM on Monday, September 21, in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St.  Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, with nephews asked to serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends on Monday beginning at 1:00 PM at Hancock Funeral Home.

Born August 9, 1945 in Americus, Gene was the son of Charlie and Marguerite Dunmon. He was a graduate of Americus High School and went on to earn both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Georgia Southwestern.

Throughout his career, Gene taught and coached, but his true passion could most often be found where the action was—calling the games on the field or on the court. Gene was a man who found great joy in sports and in the people those sports brought into his life.

Gene loved ball. Basketball, softball, baseball, and football—it didn’t matter to him, as long as it was ball. He knew the rules of the games like the back of his hand, but for Gene, umpiring was about much more than knowing the rules. It was something he genuinely loved.

He took great pride in being behind the plate, on the field, or on the court. He understood that being an umpire meant fairness, integrity, patience, and respect. He brought a steady presence, a good sense of humor, and a genuine love for the sport to every game he called.

Gene’s dedication to sports was reflected in many accomplishments throughout his career. As an assistant baseball coach at Georgia Southwestern, he was part of two conference championship teams. He was also inducted into the Georgia Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame as an umpire and received a plaque recognizing 35 years of service as a referee, among many other accomplishments.

Over the years, Gene made countless memories and formed lasting friendships through the sports he loved. He could talk about games from years ago as though they had happened just yesterday, remembering the players, the moments, and the stories that made each one special. To Gene, sports were never simply games—they were opportunities to build relationships and share experiences that stayed with him.

Although Gene never had children of his own, he was blessed with a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members who held a special place in his heart. He loved them in his own way and was a familiar and cherished presence in their lives. Through them, and through the many young people he taught and coached over the years, Gene left a lasting legacy that reached far beyond the ball field or court.

Those who knew Gene will remember his dedication, his sense of humor, his unmistakable love for sports, his love of fishing, and the genuine enthusiasm he brought whenever he entered a room. He gave his time freely and found purpose in being there.

Gene’s love for sports was a reflection of who he was: devoted, fair, passionate, and always ready to be part of something bigger than himself. His presence will be missed on the field, in the stands, on the water, and in his favorite places around Americus.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever a part of the games, the memories, and the many lives he touched along the way.

Gene is survived by two brothers, Earl Dunmon (Gloria) and Danny Dunmon (Wanda); one sister, Charlene Johnson (Jesse); many nieces nephews, great nieces, great nephews and his significant other, Seleta Rogers. Gene was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Dunmon; his mother, Marguerite Dunmon; and his oldest brother, Hal Dunmon (Joyce).
