Joseph David Lankford, a beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, veteran, and friend to all, passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, leaving a legacy of a life well lived.
Born on September 30, 1958 in Pensacola, Florida, to Sara Ann "Sally" Sykes Lankford and Tony Lamar Lankford, he spent his childhood years in Alabama, where he learned the values that would guide him for a lifetime—hard work, loyalty, and respect for others. As a young man, he eventually made his way to Americus, Georgia, a place that would become home in both heart and spirit.
He joined the military at 17 years old and graduated high school in Hawaii. He went on to attend the University of Hawaii.
He proudly served eight years in the United States Army, dedicating himself fully to his country. During his service, he was stationed in Pearl Harbor and Fort Stewart.
He completed several prestigious military programs to include: U.S. Army Ranger School, U.S. Army Airborne School, and U.S. Army Sniper School. Accomplishments that reflected his discipline, courage, and determination. He retired honorably from the Army with the rank of Sergeant, a title he carried with pride.
In 1982, his greatest role began when he became a father and husband, a responsibility he embraced wholeheartedly and carried with deep devotion throughout his life, providing many adventures and loving memories for himself and his family.
Following his military service, he worked in telecommunications, burying underground cable, before launching his own business in heavy equipment operation and land clearing, contributing to residential developments and concrete construction along Georgia’s east coast. His strong work ethic and reputation for doing things right were well known.Eventually, he returned home to Americus, Georgia, alongside his son. There, he worked for International Paper and later Oakcrest Lumber, dedicating more than two decades to the lumber industry. In 2009, he pursued a lifelong interest—traveling the country—as a long-haul truck driver, finding freedom and fulfillment on the open road.He later returned once more to the lumber industry and retired from Georgia-Pacific, closing a long chapter of honest, hands-on work.By this time, he had become a proud grandfather, finding deep joy and fulfillment in watching his only son raise his children. His love for his family was steady, quiet, and unwavering. He had a rare gift for turning community into family. Known throughout town, he could be seen anywhere—always ready with a smile, a laugh, or a story. He left an impression on everyone he met, and his presence will be deeply missed. His life was marked by service, perseverance, and kindness—values that will continue to live on through those who knew and loved him.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Sara Ann "Sally" Sykes Shell and Alton Clive Shell.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, William David Lankford and Tonya Maria Lankford; sisters: Elizabeth Leanne Lankford and Karen Anita Shell; grandchildren: Inocencia Isabelle Lankford, Elijah Nathan Urbina, William Clive Lankford, and William Tobias Lankford; and many other loving family members.
