Guy Bryant Gunnels, 97, passed away Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia.
He was born June 1, 1928, in Webster County, Georgia to the late Thelma Christine Tyler and Jesse French Gunnels. He was married for 59 years to the late Alice Ruth Turner Gunnels, who was reared in Plains, Georgia.
He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Lee Gunnels McCraney, and son-in-law Jim McCraney, of Plains, Georgia, and several nieces and nephews as well as grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
He served in the Korean War with the US Air Force and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He was employed by the United States Postal Service in Columbus, Georgia, for 36 years. His part-time retirement work was in transportation for several Columbus automobile dealerships. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Columbus. Mr. Gunnels enjoyed fishing, gardening, and in retirement years, baking cakes as well as working for his son-in-law and daughter's former business, Muscogee Moulding Inc.
Mr. Gunnels was known as a generous, people-loving Christian man and served as a mentor to several young people in his family and Columbus neighborhood.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, in Porter Chapel at First Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia, with Dr. Jimmy Elder officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, from 1:30PM to 2:00PM in the chapel.
