Eugene “Gene” Roy, III, 74, of Rockford, IL died Sunday, December 21, 2025, in OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center after a brief illness. Born in Americus, GA on July 6, 1951, the son of Eugene H. Roy, Jr. and Anne Calhoun McMath Roy. The family moved to Rockford, IL, in 1957. Mr. Roy attended Maude E. Johnson elementary school, Lincoln Junior High School, and East Senior High School. He also studied in England between the 9th and 10th grades with a group of Chicagoland students. Mr. Roy graduated from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY earning his BA degree. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Upon graduation he attended Wake Forest University School of Law where he graduated with a JD. He made his home in Lisle, IL and was employed by the State of Illinois and later CNA Insurance Company specifically in cases of workers’ compensation.
Mr. Roy enjoyed a host of friends whom he treasured. He enjoyed bridge games, theater performances in New York and London and dinner parties. He had a sharp intellect and an uncanny memory. Gene could quote lines from the movies and theater, two of his favorite pastimes. He was an avid reader, especially of books about history and biographies.
Mr. Roy was a southern gentleman at heart, and he never lost his love for Georgia and the tender childhood memories of Americus where his dear grandparents lived. As a child he would visit Georgia and bring back branches of cotton bolls to his curious and amazed classmates!
Mr. Roy was a long-standing member of the University Club of Rockford.
Survived by his mother, Anne Calhoun McMath Roy of Rockford, IL. Also surviving are cousins, Patricia Green and Meg DeVeau of Sarasota, FL. Predeceased by his father, Eugene Roy Jr. and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Interment at a later date will take place in Calhoun-Riley Private Family Cemetery in Arlington, Georgia.
